You're engaged - congratulations! Do the following things now...

Tell all potential wedding guests you're engaged

Choose a wedding date

Choose what type of ceremony or service you want, and the amount of people you'd like to invite

Visit possible venues and check your dates with them

Set your budget and talk to family about who's paying for what

Organise your wedding insurance

Open a dedicated wedding bank account or saving plan and start saving

Choose your bridesmaids, best man and ushers - ask if they'd like to be part of your big day

Book your tickets to the National Wedding Show


Wedding planner - 6-12 months to go

Book your venue

Check your date with your minister, priest or rabbi or book the register office

Make your first draft of the guest list

Send out save the date cards to friends and family

Start a scrapbook filled with ideas about colours and themes torn out from the pages of Wedding and Wedding Flowers

Hire a wedding planner if you're going to have one

Look at loads of sample menus and book your caterer

Book your wedding photographer

Book your videographer if you're having one

Book your wedding transport

Order your wedding stationery including invites, orders of service and placecards

Start looking for your cake maker

Make appointments to try on wedding dresses

Choose your florist and discuss ideas

Book your reception entertainment

Begin a health and beauty regime

Wedding planner - 4-6 months to go

If your wedding isn't in a Church of England, you'll need to get in touch with the superintendent registrar at your local register office to give notice

Nudge your groom to start looking for suits for himself, his best man and the ushers

Order your wedding cake

Choose and purchase your wedding rings for you both

Set up your gift list if you're having one

Choose or start making your wedding day favours

Book accommodation for any guests who need it

Reserve any rental equipment such as chairs or glassware

Arrange a menu tasting with your caterer - any good caterer will do this for you

Have your first wedding dress fitting - don't forget to take the lingerie and shoes you want to wear on the wedding day

Find and book your hair and make-up artist - make sure they can do a trial for you

Select your wedding readings and music and confirm your choices with your minister/registrar

Send out your invitations including details of your gift list if you're having one

Confirm your booking if you're marrying in a register office

Finalise your honeymoon plans, visas, passports and travel insurance - and check to see if you need jabs!

Have order of service sheets printed

Write your personalised wedding vows, if you're doing your own

Schedule a wedding rehearsal for one week before the big day

Buy a guest book for everyone to sign

Try out various hair and make-up looks

Plan your hen and stag parties with your bridesmaids and ushers

Buy your going-away outfit and any things you may need for your honeymoon

Book your first-night hotel

Contact local or national newspapers if you want to publish your wedding announcement

Chase all unanswered invitations and draw up a final guest list

Finalise your reception seating plan

Give the final number of guests to your caterer and venue

Buy the marriage licence from the registrar

Have your final dress fitting and confirm when you're going to pick it up

Choose gifts for your wedding party

Write out your name cards or send them off to be printed

Type up a list of must-have pictures for your photographer

Confirm timings of the day with all your key wedding suppliers, including photographer, florist, cake maker and band/DJ.

Plan your honeymoon wardrobe

Remind your fiancé to have a haircut!

Wedding planner - 1 week to go

Have a final hair and make-up practice

Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue if it's not being made in-house

Reconfirm final numbers with your caterer - you're likely to have had a few cancelations

Hold your wedding rehearsal with the rest of the wedding party

Double-check your wedding dress and accessories

Make sure your best man has arranged for the hired suits to be returned on time after the wedding

Wear in your wedding shoes around the house - just don't let the groom see you!

 
Wedding planner - the day before

Help to decorate the venue, if you want to make sure it's all just as you want it

Have a manicure and pedicure

Have your honeymoon luggage sent to your first-night hotel

Eat a small meal and drink lots of water, take a long bath with lots of bubbles, have an early night - and try to relax!
