Do you have to have a big wedding and a long engagement?

I mean I don't have a big family, my girlfriend does but she's not really hung up on tradition either. I don't see what's wrong with just having a small ceremony with just us somewhere special (maybe a close friend or two). Also what's the deal with proposing and then waiting a year or so to actually get married? If you're in love enough to propose why not get hitched asap, most people seem to think that engagements are like a test period but I thought that was what moving in together was supposed to be. Maybe I'm just sort of a loner weirdo for thinking this but I'd be embarrassed to go through a huge wedding reception and such.
